Any way to re-appeal? Also have a numbered series and want to be sure they're complete in-game

Hi there, first post. Two questions:

Q1) I recently annotated a series of bat boxes in Devichoys Wood, Cornwall, maintained by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust along a woodland walk. These are numbered boxes visible from the walking trail, and they are explicitly there to house rare bat species (e.g. Lesser Horseshoe bat, Barbastelle bat). More info can be found here: Devichoys Wood | Cornwall Wildlife Trust

I annotated all the Trail Markers and the 12 bat boxes along the “Meadow Trail” and the “Woodland Trail” in Pokemon Go recently as we were there. The simple “here’s an arrow” Trail Markers are sailing through acceptances (hooray), but frustratingly the bat boxes are being accepted or rejected for somewhat arbitrary reasons. This woodland is hard for me to get to, so I’d really appreciate not having to resubmit these. Is there a way to re-appeal a rejected appeal?

Of the 12 bat boxes (sometimes two on the same tree and annotated as a single wayspot), boxes 3 & 4 and boxes 10 & 11 have been accepted, while box 6 was rejected and my appeal was rejected, box 7 was rejected, and boxes 1 & 2 are in appeal right now. The rejections were for “in a sensitive location” (it’s a woodland walking trail…) and “not unique or culturally important” (it’s a series of unique trail markers along a woodland walk maintained by a Wildlife Trust…).

Any advice? Anything I can do to re-appeal a rejected appeal?

Q2) These are part of a series with 8 wayspots nominated (12 boxes split over 8 wayspots, some are two boxes on a single tree). Presently the accepted bat boxes are not “in-game.” If they do enter the game, it’ll be kind of important (and more fun) that they are all included in-game, as they’re part of a numbered series. It’d be silly to have bat boxes 3 & 4 in game, but not 5 or 6, but yes 10 & 11, etc…

Is there any way to promote a wayspot to in-game if it is not currently in-game?

All advice on these questions much appreciated! Wayspot details below:

  • Wayspot Title: Devichoys Woods Bat Boxes 1 & 2

  • Location (lat/lon): near to 50.201041, -5.121046

  • City: Mylor CO

  • Country: United Kingdom

  • Additional Information (if any): See above. Especially see: Devichoys Wood | Cornwall Wildlife Trust .

  • Status: Appeal pending.

  • In-game?: n/a

  • Wayspot Title: Devichoys Woods Bat Boxes 3 & 4

  • Location (lat/lon): 50.201041, -5.121046

  • City: Mylor CO

  • Country: United Kingdom

  • Additional Information (if any): See above. Especially see: Devichoys Wood | Cornwall Wildlife Trust . This wayspot was accepted ~1 day ago.

  • Status: Accepted.

  • In-game?: Not in-game (yet?).

  • Wayspot Title: Devichoys Woods Bat Box 5

  • Location (lat/lon): near to 50.201041, -5.121046

  • City: Mylor CO

  • Country: United Kingdom

  • Additional Information (if any): See above. Especially see: Devichoys Wood | Cornwall Wildlife Trust .

  • Status: In queue.

  • In-game?: n/a.

  • Wayspot Title: Devichoys Woods Bat Box 6

  • Location (lat/lon): near to 50.201041, -5.121046

  • City: Mylor CO

  • Country: United Kingdom

  • Additional Information (if any): See above. Especially see: Devichoys Wood | Cornwall Wildlife Trust .

  • Status: Appeal rejected. I have re-submitted this as a new submission with additional info, but I would hope it does not get re-rejected… Also I had to manually try and annotate the lat/long by doing so online rather than in-person, so it’d be nice to approve the existing ones.

Reason: “The submission lacks uniqueness or historical and cultural meaning.”
Scopely explore note: “Scopely Explore Note. Thanks for the appeal, Wayfinder! The nomination in question does not meet the Wayfarer criteria as these bat boxes are very common and nothing interesting about it. If this assessment is not accurate, please resubmit the nomination with additional context.”

    • I would please note that I stated these are not only bat boxes (already kinda fun trail features), but are themselves effectively trail markers in a series along the trails, and are maintained by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust as the area is a local and important bat reserve. I could have been more detailed in my original submission or appeal, but I really didn’t expect the appeal to fail because I assumed being numbered and being maintained by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust was sufficient…

Welcome to the forum.

I get lost reading long posts, so let me just say that I do not believe bat boxes should be submitted or accepted. People should not be approaching them. They are just there to encourage the bats to use them, and inviting people to approach them defeats the purpose. If there is educational signage, I would submit that.

They’re 20 feet up in the air. I don’t think one can approach them, and they’re literally along the trail. You can sit at a bench 10 feet from the base of the tree housing Bat Boxes 11 & 12, facing them. It is an intended feature of the woods.

If I provide short info, it’s disregarded. If I provide full info, it’s disregarded. It’s good to read the info. It contains… info.

I am not staff. They will read the entire post. There is no formal way to appeal an appeal as you asked in your title. Occasionally people will quietly get a new email with a different decision after posting here.

This is not an intended use of the Wayspot Appeals category, so this topic will most likely be moved to a different category.

The community has observed that becoming a Pokestop or gym depends on S2 cell algorithms you can read about here: A Comprehensive Guide to S2 Cells and Pokémon GO | Pokémon GO Hub

While staff do not acknowledge these specific rules, they do acknowledge there are further inclusion and density rules. If your accepted wayspots are not in game, it is probably due to these rules. Here I have highlighted the L17 S2 cell so you can see that only one of these is eligible to appear in game.

Good to know, I will edit to remove that.

I deleted where i quoted that, too.

Another case where only one of these can be a pokestop.

Did I cover all the ones that are accepted but not pokestop/gyms?

Yes, thanks! That’s super helpful. Much appreciated. I’ll see how this all shakes out.

Apologies if I came off snarky in trying to cut through to the essence of the bat box issue. We really do like to help here.

Bats are super carriers of diseases including rabies. Even up in the air stopping to do a raid or rocket there can expose you to dangerous pathogens. Conservation is great but it seems almost crazy that these boxes are placed on a walking trial.

Two ways to look at this:

  1. You’re technically not wrong. Wildlife can be disease reservoirs, and being in the woods exposes you to places where animals are. That’s very different from being asked to interact with them… Badgers carry tuberculosis. Bees can sting you. Walking in nature presents risks.

  2. A sign at a petting zoo would certainly be an eligible pokestop. A sign for a bee hotel would be an eligible pokestop. Dogs and cats can carry rabies, viruses, etc… and we let them lick our face. It’s a risk-hazard thing.

The risk of interacting with bats because you walk past trees on a trail with bat boxes installed 20 feet up in the air is infinitesimally low.

I remember walking on a trail with bat boxes back in 2019 was ok, and then hi covid)

I’m no microbiologist and can’t speak for the risk. The point is it’s unnecessary increased risk. Those boxes can be placed far from the trail for the same effect. If the goal is to raise awareness, I question how many people would notice a few boxes so high up.

If it helps, I am an evolutionary biologist and immunologist. So I, quite literally, can speak to the risk.

Alright I concede. TIL.

This is in the UK. There’s no rabies here, and our bats are generally tiny and not at all aggressive.

They are however extremely protected by law, and I’m really not sure that large groups of people gathering under their homes is really in the spirit of those laws…
