There’s a very famous train trestle in my town that is notorious for semi trucks not heeding the low clearance warning and getting the tops of their trucks destroyed. The trestle has become a local legend in our town and everyone knows about it, it’s basically a shared inside joke for all of our residents.
The trestle is so famous locally that it even has a satirical Facebook page where people anthropomorphize it and make jokes about it eating the semi trucks lol The trestle claims a snackrifice at least a few times a year. (Thankfully to my knowledge when people make the mistake of driving into the trestle nobody has been hurt.)
Would this qualify as a wayspot? I feel like it has enough importance to the local community that it should, but I don’t think it technically fits into any of the qualifying categories.
I don’t have an answer for you, but funnily, there is a whole website dedicated to posting videos of these crashes where I live. It’s been going for almost 20 years! https://11foot8.com/
I would say the can opener bridge in Durham is iconic and something people would be interested in seeing (and already a wayspot as @cyndiepooh pointed out). In fact, on the other side from the pictures that were posted is a newish food truck park opened and named after the bridge. Yes, if you were unfortunate enough to walk under it during one of the 6-12 times a year that some truck ignores all of the warnings, it could get sketchy, but there is a side walk on both sides of the road and people do use it routinely. For me safety isn’t the issue, it’s more about how interesting the place is,
Crashes have slowed since they raised the bridge 8” a few years ago, but you are right… the traffic light that turns red when a tall truck approaches and the giant sign that lights up to tell drivers they are over height doesn’t deter everyone!
