Are Plain Public Footpath signs now allowed in the UK?

Having not reviewed anything (or been playing the game) for more than a couple of years. I have noticed that there are a number of plain public Footpath signs - i.e. not with a named trail route identifiable. Are these now allowed? Or have some just slipped through the net? I am seeing them coming up in the are these duplicates prompts as well as in new submissions (meaning they already got in).

As an example

Please refer to the criteria clarification collection above. My English is only a bit limited so I might be wrong, but I think this sign is intended to show that it is a safe footpath. Since it doesn’t encourage exercise, doesn’t it fail to meet the eligibility criteria?
The above guideline is based on the responses from the criteria clarification challenge held in August 2022. Originally, given its role as a sign, it shouldn’t meet the eligibility criteria if you think about it carefully, but it might have been mistakenly registered as Wayspots in large numbers because it looked similar. As is often said in this forum, it is important to evaluate based on the criteria rather than referencing what’s already on the map.

A PROW can be eligible as it is a set path and it does have a number.

I use rowmaps website to check that it is a a proper right of way, and not just a path.

They then have to be acceptable. Some PROW are in effect short paths in housing estates or are now along a road, they are unlikely to be considered as good for exercise or exploration.

So the submitter should say why this particular PROW will be good for exercise…..it might be a kilometer long and start in housing but go out into countryside that could be acceptable.

Footpath signs int the UK like that are generally eligible.

if it is a sign for a short path between housing from road to road, it doesn’t really encourage exercise, so won’t get accepted.

If it shows the way along a footpath into or in the countryside, it is encouraging exercise and exploration, which makes it eligible. It isn’t simply saying “it is safe to walk here”.

It still has to exist, have a reasonable description and be correctly located.

Personally I think if its a trail marker and doesn’t lead to the M6, it should count, but other reviewers probably dont agree.

It is not the marker that is being primarily being assessed it is the trail or route.

So if the route of the path is just amongst houses it is going to struggle to meet criteria. Likewise If it is short ( some are only about 60m ).

I distinguish between footpaths based on where they lead. Those that lead from one road to the next between housing, we agree are not remarkable.

Ones that lead into the countryside, even if that path number technically ends at a junction after 50m and two new path numbers take over, is eligible as no person walking along it cares about the path numbers. I expect that some paths will have the most walked route being a combination of different path numbers.

I disagree that any PROW that is not a named trail can be called a trail and that the official path designation can be used to call it a trail, but this doesn’t stop it being eligble.

I think we are both on same page ( or PROW even :joy: ) just expressing differently :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

For a long time I did skip a lot of these. Especially if it just said Public Footpath with no Trail Name.

I was seeing too many Footpaths along the lines of “Public Footpath. From here you can make your way to the Beach / Town Center / Named Trail”, when you looked it was a fair distance. I could say My Garden Path leads to the Grand Canyon, Just a taxi, a plane and a coach trip away

I recently nominated 2 mainly because the whole area was empty and I was hoping it would encourage others to add to them.

Now, don’t feel right skipping when mine got accepted so I follow your leads.

  • Check the Prow Map.
  • Does it go more than a few metres.
  • Is it more than connecting 2 roads.
  • Does it lead to other footpaths.

I am slowly becoming 1 of you lot… :person_walking:

But 60m is still surely a trail? Sure not a very significant trail but still a trail

When it is a path joining one road to another, between houses, it isn’t a trail. It’s an alley or gennel. It’s just infrastructure that happens to be a PROW.

But surely under niantix guidelines they say any PROW counts? May have misread it but that’s what i remember.

I may just be thick but if a submitter can find the official number of the trail, for example #:SH5008, then it should count but yeah

Don’t think it mentions every PROW

Yeah my bad, I just remembered some old article that I must have mixed up
