Trail/route markers are definitely eligible as they represent an area for exercise and possibly exploration. That said, they do need to have a specific trail/route. I’ll link some clarification below, but the others have explained it fairly well already.

Trails that encourage following a specific official route by walking are great places to be social, exercise, and explore - the trail is the interesting feature. Trail markers are tangible anchor points that define the route of the trail on the Wayfarer map. I have another clarification article for you about benches. As others have said they can work but you’ll need to write it up well. I also recommend doing a search on the Forum as others here have had some good discussions about scenic viewpoints (with a bench).

Seating Benches

Memorial benches can only be eligible under the criteria for exploration if they are dedicated to a notable figure and that notability is described in the nomination. Mass produced memorial benches dedicated to friends and family are not eligible unless the nominator provides evidence of the individual’s importance to the community. I’ve recently had a similar thing (bench in a play area, and sports field) rejected and again on appeal. The reply back was “that appears just to be a generic bench”.
It seems memorial benches are more likely to be approved, generic ones less so

I don’t want to get too sidelined but the clarifications about benches need to considered.
The bench that @RoB0195 has posted shows that there is a nice view from that bench. The Photograph demonstrates that. How nice that view is, is something that is subjective so it is always a case by case basis.
A simple bench in a play area or besides a sports field is unlikely to meet socialisation criteria. A shelter with a group of benches where those skateboarding can gather, relax and socialise. A picnic table next to a play area again is a place to socialise.
As the clarification states for memorial benches to be accepted then unless the person is notable locally then they shouldn’t be accepted….the onus is on the submitter to prove the significance of the person. So again a case by case basis.
A unique artistic bench is considered on its individual merits

I’ve seen these as pokestops that have been nominated though so why are some people getting a free pass

It is a common piece of advice on the forums that you should never use what you see on the map as evidence that they meet criteria…

• As stated some benches do meet criteria. You are not seeing everything that the nominator stated so maybe that was does meet criteria, doesn’t mean they all do.
• The criteria has changed over time.
• It could have been incorrectly accepted but Removal has it’s own set of criteria.
• It could have got through by abuse of the process.

I’ve literally seen bins painted and somehow that is allowed but most of the rejections are about how something doesn’t have “historical” or “cultural” value

I have also had my frustration over the automated process. I have reached a point where I accept it takes some of my nominations and that is just part of it. You can always appeal them later, but for active submitters, the 2 appeals every 15 days or so is just not enough. Especially when you submit a lot of picnic tables, walking paths or photos that are a little grey because of the weather.

An extra appeal every 15 day would be nice, or a separated system for automatic rejection and community rejection

I am not a big numbers guy so 2 appeals every 15 days is more than enough for me.

I understand that others do many more nominations and extra appeals would be helpful but if they gave a 3rd appeal I am sure people would be asking for a 4th.

The bit I always thought was unfair is when an appeal is successful IMO you should get that appeal back straight away.
