Cannot access Help Chat on the Wayfarer Map

As of the latest version of Wayfarer released (v5.50), I have lost the ability to use Help Chat when viewing the Wayfarer Map.

Reproduction steps:

  • Click on Help page to access orange button for Help Chat
  • Navigate to Map page
  • Old behaviour: Button stays present
  • New behaviour: Button disappears

This also happens if I open the chat window first.

  • Click on Help page to access orange button for Help Chat
  • Open the chat interface
  • Navigate to Map page
  • Old behaviour: Chat stays present
  • New behaviour: Chat disappears

99.9% of the time I use the Help Chat is on the Wayfarer Map, as I am looking at titles and locations for making reports. This removal – intentional or not – is a major nerf and makes the site less usable.

Why? This makes it so difficult to grab the exact Wayspot title and gps coordinates. Why was this change made?

It was in response to multiple reports suggesting that the widget was limiting the ability to navigate the map.

Interesting. Thank you for the reply. Not an issue for me ever on desktop.

Can you please provide feedback to the dev team that there has been negative feedback about the change from multiple users (@Xenopus flagged to me as a third) as it has impacted other users in their reporting flow.

The team could instead consider moving the map controls to the left instead of the right, as this would mean the chat button does not overlap the map controls.

I agree, removing the ability to use the Help Chat bubble while viewing the map makes it so much harder to complete a report that way. Please consider other ways to solve the map navigation problem.

I also always thought being able to have the help chat bubble on the map while using it was a feature, not an undesirable issue. The source of the information that goes into that bubble most often comes from the map. In other cases, it comes from your own Contribution Management, where again it makes sense to be able to display the chat bubble on other tabs. Not sure why we can’t have both map controls and the bubble.

The solution suggested there was moving it to the left, not removing it from the tab.
