Feature Request & Bug Report: Addressing AI-Generated/Stolen Photo Spam and Postcard Sync Delays

Dear Niantic Wayfarer and Game Development Teams,

I am writing to address a growing and severe issue within our community: the malicious and repeated upload of non-compliant photos—specifically AI-generated images, stolen/falsified pictures, and heavy landscape sceneries—by disruptive users into Wayspot galleries globally.

Below are the primary technical and system issues we urgently need Niantic to address, followed by proposed improvements and concrete evidence of abusive behavior.

Part 1: Technical Bug — Postcard Image Synchronization Delay

  • Issue Description: When an invalid, AI-generated, or rule-breaking Wayspot photo is successfully removed from a Wayspot gallery, the in-game PokéStop/Gym photo and thumbnail update correctly, but the Postcard images (sent or pinned by players) fail to update even after more than 48 hours.

  • Impact: This lag creates major confusion among players, as outdated or malicious images continue to circulate through postcards, making it look like the photo was never removed.

  • Requested Fix: Please synchronize the postcard photo asset pipeline with the updated Wayspot primary photo database so that postcard images refresh simultaneously upon photo removal.

Part 2: Proposed System Mechanism Improvements Against AI & Stolen Photo Spam

To combat the rising wave of malicious uploads (such as AI-generated fake signs and fictional scenery), we strongly urge Niantic to implement a proactive automated moderation system:

  1. Pre-Upload Automated Validation: Implement a system check for newly submitted photos to detect anomalies, such as AI-generated visual distortions, known stolen image patterns, or extreme mismatch ratios (e.g., massive landscape/sky/aurora ratios with zero subject focus).

  2. AI & Copyright Detection Integration: Utilize automated filters to flag potential AI-generated content or copyright-infringing photos before they enter the public Wayspot voting pool.

  3. Automatic Interception & Internal Review: If a photo triggers high-risk AI or non-compliance flags, the system should automatically intercept the upload and route it directly to Niantic internal staff for manual safety and authenticity review, bypassing regular community voting where griefers manipulate scores.

  4. Strict Penalties for Repeat Abusers: Apply severe, automated penalties (such as temporary suspensions or permanent account bans) to accounts caught repeatedly spamming AI-generated or malicious falsified content.

Part 3: Evidence of Malicious User Activity ***Mod Edit

To illustrate how severely this exploit is currently being abused, please review the attached collage showcasing multiple malicious uploads by a single repeat offender (***MOd Edit):

  • Attached Evidence Overview (Mod Edit):

    • AI-Generated/Falsified Play Structures & Signs: Uploading artificial, AI-distorted snow scenes and fake information signs with garbled gibberish text (shown in the bottom-left/top-left playground and middle-bottom glacier sign uploads).

    • Irrelevant Landscapes & Auroras: Spamming unrelated giant glaciers, mountain vistas, sunsets, and aurora borealis night skies into localized park or monument galleries where the actual POI is completely missing.

We appreciate the Wayfarer team’s ongoing efforts to maintain data integrity. Implementing these automated safeguards and fixing the postcard sync delay will greatly protect our global map and restore community trust.

Thank you for your time and prompt action.

Best regards,

A Dedicated Wayfarer Contributor & Community Member
