Historical Marker question

Have not submitted yet, but… there’s a historical marker I would like some advice on, in terms of word choice.

I live in a former Spanish colony, which means we had government sponsored Catholic missionary churches very early in our history. In our specific case, during the first decade, the mission priest was killed. He’s been declared a martyr by the church, it was the native peoples, all that.

This marker is at the actual site of death (to note, it’s not a grave and not at the church, which still exists). The plaque uses very pro-church terminology, but I’m concerned that just quoting it might be seen by reviewers as biased or inflammatory.

I’m also wondering if there’s specific words I should avoid. (The forum filtered one already….)

Thoughts?

I would be tempted not to quote it. Use a clear title like “Plaque for John Smith” and you can describe it without having to repeat anything that is on it.
