Inactive Gym preventing third Gym

Hello,

I would like to report a possible issue with the Gym configuration in an S2 Level 14 cell in Lisbon, Portugal.

The Wayspot involved is:

Praça do Comércio
Coordinates: 38.707400, -9.136432

This Wayspot was previously an active Gym in Pokémon GO. It is now shown on the Wayfarer map as a Gym with the status “Inactive”, with the message that it will not appear in Pokémon GO.

There are currently two active Gyms in the same S2 Level 14 cell:

  • D. José I — 38.707530, -9.136484

  • Cais das Colunas — 38.706562, -9.136071

The cell has subsequently reached 20 PokéStops/Wayspots. A new 20th PokéStop was recently approved and is now visible both in Pokémon GO and on the Wayfarer map, confirming that the new Wayspot has successfully synced to the game.

However, no third active Gym has appeared.

My concern is that the inactive Gym at Praça do Comércio may still be counted internally as a Gym for this S2 Level 14 cell, even though it is not available to Pokémon GO players. This could potentially be preventing another eligible PokéStop from being promoted to an active Gym in a very populated area (Donwtown Lisbon). Besides that, while looking for the problem, I noticed photos of that inactive Pokestop with visible people and licence plates, which violates the Photos Guidelines.

Could you please check whether the inactive Gym at Praça do Comércio is still counting towards the Gym limit for this cell?

If so, could its status be corrected so that the cell can be correctly recalculated and, if it meets the requirements, another PokéStop can be promoted through the normal Gym selection process?

This is a very busy area in central Lisbon, with significant pedestrian activity, so having an inactive Gym occupying one of the potential Gym slots leaves the area underutilized both for Pokémon GO players and Scopely.

I am not requesting that a specific PokéStop be selected as the third Gym. I would simply like the inactive Gym to be correctly handled by the system so that the normal Gym creation process can take place.

I attach screenshots of the Wayfarer map, the inactive Gym status and the relevant S2 Level 14 cell if needed.

Hello and Welcome,

I do remember other posts with a similar problem but I do not remember the outcome.

The “Inactive Gym” does seem to be sharing a cell with an Active Gym which shouldn’t happen.

Has the “Inactive Gym” recently been moved to this location?

Or it could be that it has recently been re-calculated and it can a while for everything to catch up.

I don’t know whether it was relocated. I work near that area, and for quite some time now (since December 2025) there have only been two active Gyms there.

The “Inactive Gym”/former third Gym does not exist in the whole S2 cell (at least) since that time. I only raided in the other two gyms.

An inactive gym is a gym, so it counts towards the number of gyms in the cell when Pokemon Go gets a new wayspot and makes the check for whether a new gyn is required.

It doesn’t matter if the gym is active or not and whether it is in the same cell as another pokestop oy gym. All that matters is that it is a gym.
