Hoping someone could shed some light on this. I’ve given up on this nomination for a few weeks now; it’s not even eligible to become a Poke Stop but I was just submitting for the love of the game because I thought it was a slam dunk.
This phonebooth is a permanent installation in the window of this store. I thought I had a decent title, description, and photo where I ensured neither I nor anyone else was visible in the reflection.
The first submission on 3 September automatically went under Niantic/Scopely Explore review. Okay, sure, I know that happens sometimes. After a while, however, the nomination was rejected for not being a permanent or distinct installation. I appealed it, but it was rejected again for being a temporary display.
It is not a temporary display. It’s a significant trademark display that’s been there since opening. The window it’s displayed in has been custom fitted to the phonebooth itself. I tried to emphasize it when I submitted the nomination again on 14 September, but it went under Wayfarer review AGAIN and this time, was rejected automatically.
I haven’t touched it since 14 September because honestly, I have no idea what I’m doing wrong or why this submission is repeatedly being denied. Is it because it’s a window display and the review AI is detecting that? I understand a lot of window displays are temporary/seasonal and displaying the season’s clothing and whatnot, but this installation isn’t that.
Window decoration tend to change overtime. It can last for months or years but reviewer dont know it. If you have proof that it will be permanent, please do so. Simply saying its permanent is not enough. Some submitter will say anything to get their submission approved so people cant just trust your word as it is (i am not saying you did this)
Business Signage
This could include being one of a kind and created by a local artist, or being distinctive and noteworthy in the local community.
I can confirm the sign is present at other Charles Tyrwhitt flagship stores, but most of which are all the way in the UK and there are only a handful of flagships in the US that have this display. Smaller satellite stores do not have it.
Given that, even though it is business signage, can it not qualify as being “distinctive and noteworthy in the local community”? This is the only sign of its kind in Chicago and in the midwest. While it is business signage, its presence at the store locations is not universal, and it’s also unique by merit of being in the US (vs in the UK where these red phonebooths are everywhere in iconography, on the streets, etc). I would have thought cultural context would have an impact here, no?
This argument would not convince me, but it might work on others. Do you have evidence pointing to anything saying this is noteworthy? Feature in a local magazine, for example? An artist signature?
If you have such information, you need to bring that to reviewer. You cant expect reviewer to google all that information themselves. Even that wont guarantee acceptance. What most people see is only window decoration that seems temporary
It could be considered distinct. Feels like a 50-50 kind of a nomination to me, relying on the opinion of the reviewers that you happen to get. Personally, I would have voted against, but I’m in the UK, so perhaps my perspective is skewed.
Ironically, these things are pretty rare here now, outside of the touristy areas of London.
Your biggest issue is permanence. As long people see it as temporary, it doesnt matter even if you can put one of a kind famous artist art in your window display. If its temporary, its ineligible
Yeah I’m getting that. My original question was about how it went to official review twice in a row, but perhaps just the mere fact that it’s in a window is working against me (and perhaps triggered the AI to discard it automatically).
I do strongly believe in the nomination and again, I have nothing to gain from this because it’s not going to show up in game lol. I’ll go in there and just straight up ask them if it’s permanent and see if I can get photos of how it’s fastened to the window frame. I get it; it’s a window display so people are going to automatically assume it’s temporary but it has remained there while the clothing displays next to it get changed out regularly, and other flagships that have existed for years still have this same display. So I will work to prove that in my next submission.
You need to proof this. I try to look about this but cant find it. When people try to validate your claim but found nothing, they will doubt your whole statement
This also doesnt matter. Temporary window display will be fastened as well. Showing how it fastened doesnt proof anything
Put yourself in reviewer shoes that know nothing about this location. You said its permanent, but its only there for several months. You said it exist in other store for years but when i try to check , i cant find it (perhaps i am not familiar with uk stores)
Nomination got randomly pulled for internal review. This is normal for everyone. Anyway did you use same foto for 2nd submission? You need to use new foto if you want to resubmit
A few factors may be at play here. With limited data points take what follows with a grain of salt but I believe my guesses are at least rough approximations to how it works:
The automated process (aka emily) is more lenient to experienced Wayfinders. I’ve had submissions, that I was ready to use an appeal upon auto rejection, go directly for internal review. They likely do so to provide training data for emily.
Emily does (try to) identify certain types of repeated submissions. If it was rejected by staff or “a few” times by vote, instant auto rejection, not even 24hr. If it was rejected by reviewers once or twice, internal review. I believe it was put in place to discourage people spamming long shot submissions hoping to get a set of sympathetic reviewers by chance.
Heh, that is definitely not my experience. I’ve had the ML (very) incorrectly mark multiple subs as duplicates within the last couple of weeks. Seems to be getting worse, if anything.
We dont know how AI rejection works. But we know what happen when AI is not working. So many junk nomination flood the review pool. Unfortunately some eligible nomination might be incorrectly rejected but i believe staff is working to improve it
