Not particularly happy with this change

Maybe im just being old and grumpy, but im actually a bit annoyed by this one, I find it a bit easier submitting through the app rather than the website, maybe be suse ive had so many minor issues when submitting through the website (not being where I am, sometimes just not uploading etc). This just seems like making submissions take a bit longer and involve a bit more.

Hi,

It’s alright to be a bit grumpy.

But honestly since websubmit was available I haven’t gone back.

The recent save as draft helps enormously.

I showed that all you need is a title, quick check location is roughly right and save as a draft.

Everything can then be adjusted later inside on good WiFi. Select photo, add up to 5 images, adjust location within 80m of the pin write text and you don’t use a submission until you press submit.

You can quickly take lots of pics and worry about selecting later.

Do give it a try.

I just tried and it has changed

It would have been nice if this was accompanied by an increase in submission distance for high rank wayfarers. Being able to seed prospective submissions with a draft is nice, but still having to be within 10km to submit is a pain. In the PoGo app, it was really nice to be able to do an “upload later” and submit from anywhere later, in case the cell service was spotty where you were.

No argument from me about increased distance being top of my wish list.

Poor signal is a problem.

The photo is what really has problems when it s poor. The draft option does not require a photo. As long as it opens and you can enter a short title or a description then it can be saved as draft and completed and submitted from anywhere. Or do that within 10km of the location.

I stopped submitting through the app a long time ago. I already had to leave the app to take my photos, as doing that in app would just cause it to force close, so if I’m already outside the app, I might as well just use the web submission.

Already said it once and I’ll say it again - Not a fan of this either. Especially since when I tried it earlier, it wouldn’t even let me choose a location at all without enabling location data on browser. Which, once again, I am not doing. No way do I want chrome accessing location data, or any other browser for that matter.

So it looks like people who aren’t comfortable with location data being accessible by browser apps are just permanently locked out of nominating waypoints entirely. Gee, thanks scopely. Way to make an already bad decision even worse. And with what, not even one week’s worth of notice?! Yikes.

We could really use that scrapped wayfarer app right about now…

I’m interested as to why you’d be fine with Pokémon Go being able to see your location, but not your browser?

In short, because when PoGo uses location I know it’s really only scopely explore that has access to that data. Giving a browser access means who knows how many different sites, companies, other entities / people etc, might get access to it. Much easier to limit location permissions to apps where you know exactly who gets access and who doesn’t.

Hence why having a dedicated wayfarer app would solve this.

If you have app tracking enabled on your phone, any app and even your phone manufacturer will know where you are. You can put in as much control on your phone to limit tracking, but true privacy doesn’t exist on any device.

True, privacy hardly exists anymore. But that’s all the more reason why I prefer to have some limits in place. Gotta draw the line somewhere, you know?

To be honest, there is no such thing as control when it comes to Smartphones and internet devices. I won’t go into too much detail as it’s outside the scope of this site. But all I can say is unless you use a custom build OS and Tor, your perception of control is close to 0.

I have way more of a privacy concern with having to install a dedicated app where I don’t have good visibility on what happens to my data (telemetry, device information, file system etc) as opposed to a browser.

The absolute majority of modern mobile and desktop browsers offer per-website location permission control, as has been mentioned in a previous thread in response to this statement. If you are not using one that does this, you really should change it, just out of daily life safety and hygiene practices, not even in relation to Wayfarer & Scopely games.

Pretty much everything that is known about digital privacy suggests always prioritizing using services in a browser instead of an app if there are concerns and if there is a choice. So to me that’s an odd suggestion.

I downloaded another browser and set everything up for Wayfarer and Wayfarer only. Also most modern browsers will not let pages get your location data without permitting specific pages. So if you grab another browser, you’re double secure. It’s effectively like a dedicated Wayfarer app then.

Don’t wanna risk accidentally hitting accept on the wrong site. Can’t do that if you just block everything. With a single app at least you know who’s running it.

Now that isn’t a bad option.

I’d still prefer not having to deal with this though. Really don’t see any problems with ingame submissions. And less than one week’s notice is way too short in any case. We should have been told about this months ago. Most disappointing.

I understand, but trust me, it gives you more options and opportunities to improve your workflow and ideally it improves education of all users due to the criteria being present at all times. It may need some time to adjust but (imo) once you get used to Drafts, you never want to go back.

(Also long term, being used to the site is very useful since you can grab some unofficial Wayfarer Tools to help you along the way, which is a thing you can only do with browsers.)

Unfortunately, the web submission method has one missing piece of information - when you choose your photos, there is nothing to say it must be yours. In Pokemon Go, you first had text saying things that people didn’t read, but at least it was there.

This is actually huge, and I have been using Web Submit since it first came out without noticing this.

It’s easy to miss when you know what you are doing. I only noticed when responding to a thread where someone seemed to genuinely not have seen the alert about “it must be your own photo” and was wondering if there was a way they could genuinely not have seen it.

I have mentioned this a few times so it is disappointing that it hasn’t been fixed, given how much of a problem third-party photos are supposed to be.

If you say so. But so far I’m really not feeling it.

I do have those…on desktop. Which doesn’t help as much for submitting. Last time I tried getting those kinds of add ons working on mobile was a huge pain.
