Title of Nomination: Vintage Cast-Iron Emergency Call Box
-
Location / Coordinates: 500 Kappock Street, Bronx, NY

Rejection Reason: Rejection by automated machine learning process

Explanation: this is a decommissioned, historic cast-iron municipal artifact on a public sidewalk—not active emergency services equipment. Can the community/staff please provide guidance or manual review? Thanks so much!
I also reject these in review. Besides the fact that I have seen articles suggesting that these are not actually out of service, how are they a great place for exercise, exploration, or being social? It just looks like infrastructure that has possibly been abandoned, not something that has been preserved for historic value.
Now if there were signs attached to these with information, or when they have been converted to art projects, or if you have evidence that this is significant in any way - for example an official tour route marking it as a noteworthy stop - then I would consider the nomination.
Welcome to the forum! The topic of these call boxes has not come up in a bit, so thanks for posting. I am watching to see what others say.
When I last researched the topic, although many of them are not operational, they have not been decommissioned. There’s a standing court order in NYC that says if they are there, they must work. As someone that comes from an era where these were the primary way to report a fire, I agree.
