Restoration Appeal: 黒浜のお祠

Wayspot Title: 黒浜のお祠
Location: 35.998581, 139.663507
City: Hasuda-shi, Saitama
Country: Japan

Street Address / Google Maps Link:
https://maps.google.com/?q=35.998581,139.663507

Reason for Restoration / Additional Information:
This Wayspot was recently removed, likely due to a misconception about its location. As shown in the attached photos, this shrine is located along a public road and is NOT on private residential property. It is safely accessible to the public at all times without trespassing. Please consider restoring this Wayspot.

Welcome to the forum.

This shrine does appear to be on SFPRP (single family private residential property) in both satellite and street view.

Do you have evidence that the property this is on is not SFPRP? Just being able to reach it from a sidewalk is not enough.

(Not staff, just trying to help you make the best case for your appeal, if there is a case to be made.)

Thank you for your helpful reply.

I would like to clarify the ownership and access regarding this site:

  1. Land Property: This shrine is located on community/publicly accessible land along the road, rather than within the private property boundary of a single-family home. It is maintained by the local community for neighborhood worship.
  2. Open Access: There are no fences, gates, or barriers separating the shrine from the public road. Anyone can freely approach and visit the shrine at any time without entering private residential grounds.

I hope this clarifies that it does not violate SFPRP criteria. Thank you for your review and assistance.

Hello and Welcome,

I think you are going to find it difficult to convince the appeal team without evidence.

You need to show evidence of either…

  • The building surrounding this land are not SFPRP.
    And / or
  • The land does not belong to the surrounding property.

One of the facts that is going against you is if this is is not part of the buildings land then why is the “AC Unit?” sat on it.

Are there any official property maps for your location?

This makes no difference to the nomination. A common thread you will find on the forums are “Little Free Libraries” that are fixed at the boundary. People can reach it from the side walk but because it is situated on the SFPRP it is not eligible.

Good Luck

Hello and welcome to the forum. I would also like to share a few points that I noticed.
It does not look like a small shrine that gathers worship from many people. This is because the front of the shrine faces the residential house rather than the public road. In the July 2022 Street View, the wooden board on the back side (facing the public road) was peeled off, allowing a glimpse of the lattice door on the front. It was likely repaired after that.
Judging from the direction it faces, I do not believe this shrine is an object of widespread community worship. In many such cases, what is enshrined is a Yashikigami (household deity). It is likely a deity that the residents of that specific house pray to daily for household safety and health. From this perspective, this location appears to be SFPRP (Single Family Private Residential Property).

Thank you for your detailed feedback regarding the orientation and history.

I have consulted with a acquaintance who works at the local city hall and is knowledgeable about this area. They confirmed that this shrine is not a private Yashikigami, but a regional deity worshipped and maintained by the local community:

  1. Local Worship: It is a historic local shrine that neighborhood residents jointly manage and visit for prayers, not an object dedicated solely to a specific household.
  2. Public Access & Structure: Although the shrine stands near the boundary, its position allows local residents to pray directly from the public space/road. The surrounding area is kept open for community access.

Based on this confirmation from a local official and the fact that it serves as a shared spiritual spot for the neighborhood rather than a private household deity, I kindly ask you to reconsider its eligibility. Thank you for your time.

I do see the differences in the photos that @CrownFeather has pointed out. The original post shows a solid wall facing the street, so I have trouble believing this was intended as a public shrine.

Thank you for your response, @LetsRollGirl.

To clear up any misunderstanding about the ownership, I actually spoke with several neighbors in the area both before submitting the initial nomination and again recently.

They explicitly confirmed that this land is not private residential property and that the shrine belongs to the city/community, serving as a shared local site rather than a private deity. Although its orientation faces inward, it remains a public asset maintained for the neighborhood.

I hope this local context helps clarify the site’s status. Thank you again for taking the time to review my appeal.

Just saying is not enough. People tend to say anything to get their nomination approved(i am not saying you did this , but people cant just trust everything you said if there is no evidence) . If you want to get this nomination approved, you need to proof it with evidence, not just words. Is it possible to get cadastral map link and screenshot for this place?

Thank you for your response, @TJoeMi.

I am providing official evidence from the local municipality’s designated road network map (Hasuda City Map Information System) for coordinates 35.998581, 139.663507.

As shown in the attached map, the red mark indicating the shrine’s position is located directly along the municipal road boundary (Municipal Road No. 1257), outside of any private residential lot line.

Map system reference:

This official data confirms that the shrine stands on public/municipal road land and not on single-family private residential property (SFPRP). Thank you for your review.

Thank you. Wayfarer staff will make final decision.

I am sorry but i am unfamiliar with this site , how do i input the coordinate?

The screen shot also not very clear

Here is the procedure:
❶ Click “Change Theme.”
❷ Click “Certified Road Network Map.”
❸ Enter the coordinates into the search field.

This shows the official road network. It does not show property plots. The roads are not precisely located to the nearest 1m, so do not provide evidence that this shrine is against the road boundary.

The visual evidence is that this shrine is definitely not against the road boundary and is facing away from the road. This map does nothing to negate that.

This is an online public map created by a software development company. While it cannot be used as an official legal certificate, I believe it serves as a helpful reference.
This map shows the location of the small shrine in question. I was able to locate it because the registered parcel number matches the address notation. Since part of the road shape matches as well, I am confident it is accurate.

The small shrine is located at “3544-6 Kurohama, Hasuda City, Saitama Prefecture.” The residence to the west of the small shrine sits across two parcels of land: “3544-6” and “3544-7.” In other words, the shrine is located on the same plot of land (property) as the residence to its west, and its land has not been divided into a separate parcel (lot).

Thank you for providing the parcel map data.

While the map indicates that the shrine sits within parcel 3544-6 along with the residential structure, local residents confirm that this specific corner has historically been treated and maintained separately as a community-managed shrine area, not as private yard space for the residence.

I understand the strict application of the parcel boundary rules, but I wanted to highlight this local operational context. Thank you all for taking the time to review and discuss this location.

I am sure Scopely Explore will take what you have said into account. Please note that everyone else is just providing advice and it is only Scopely Explore staff that can take the decision.

If you do not hear anything from them in the next few days, it would be safe to assume they are not going to return the wayspot.

Please be prepared for them to reject your restoration appeal, as your statement that it is community-managed is not sufficient to overcome the problem of it facing away from the road and facing towards the property that it is located on.

If it is such a venerable religious artifact, it should probably be mentioned in a book about the history of the relevant municipality.
If you can show that, even this stubborn wayfinder here will recognize its value.

Even then, it would be a valuable artifact that is on SFPRP.

In Pokémon GO, the gym is located at 3560-9 Kurohama, Hasuda City, Saitama Prefecture, Japan.
