Title:
Hansatien porrastorni
Description:
Porrastorni joka esittää koiraa. Kulkuyhteys Hansatieltä Kauklahdenväylälle.
Can you seen Cartoon dog here or was reason something else than “unique”?
It was originally built to shorten schoolchildren’s route to school and also make the route “safer,” since they have to cross one fewer pedestrian crossing. More specifically, it was designed to look like a dog because of the children using it on their way to school.
Unfortunately, it’s practically impossible to get a good photo of it without a drone, because, as you can see in the picture, there is a railway directly in front of it.
All kinds of other things seem to get accepted, but when, for once, there is a ONE-OF-A-KIND staircase tower that actually looks like a cartoon dog, is good for your health, completely safe, and open to everyone, somehow it’s not considered unique enough?
I see this got a lot of views but no comments. That surprises me. To me this is at least as interesting as some of the street art I see, plus it provides safe passage along a route if I understand correctly. Although it looks more like a cartoon horse than a cartoon dog to me, but the feet, legs, eyes, and snout seem to be an intentional part of the design.
Is there a named walking route this is on? Is there any evidence that the design is intentional?
I would accept but you can really improve the submission with more context and supplemental photos. Did it ever go into voting before appeal?
I had to double check but no there is not any routes going through it. I could easily change situation tho. I will try to take “better” pictures tomorrow so you know what I mean with it being cartoon dog exactly. I’ve been trying to search for evidence like crazy but I only saw something after it was created and I’m not quite sure but it has been there over a year now.
I tried to make it clear because I cannot find any info about it from anywhere. I will post more pictures from distance and explain why this SHOULD be a stop. But for now I can only tell that old way for kids was way less safe since they needed to walk next to cars without any fence. Red area is where they made those dog stairs.
With the help of Chatgpt I found out these are called fox/dog stairs.
I just remember that locals were having conversation that old way to school was not safe so City helped kids especially and made these. And I’m not sure if ever any human has seen these. I got response in few days.
I did see the post but as I have no frame of reference of this sort of POI I decided “If nothing to say, say nothing”
Taking another look my thoughts on whether this should be accepted…
Is this encouraging exercise or just making it safer. I assume the School Children used to use another route before.
Even the OP describes it as “looks like a cartoon dog” with no certainty that was the intention. Could it be that people like to see patterns in things (think how people see animals in the clouds or Jesus on a slice of toast
).
Ps. Surely it’s an Elephant with it trunk as the walkway part
If ur walking or driving from exact direction (other side u cant see it), u can see it looking exactly Fox/dog. That “nose” is waaay shorter from that direction because its made on different angle. They didn’t name it on anywhere so they were just steel stairs. But since they are free to use, totaly safe, very unique I don’t see whats the difference with some random graffitis getting accepted. But I will take more pictures tomorrow so EVERYBODY can see that painting and architecture is not just jesus on a cup
I am not saying whether it should or shouldn’t be Accepted just looking to answer why it was Rejected by Reviewers then again by the appeals team.
The only reason is whether the location should have been rejected without the paint job then whether the way it is painted was intentional.
At the moment it could be seen as “Infrastructure that to some looks a bit like something”. This is what you need to address.
We always say do not use what’s on the map already to determine what meets criteria. These could have been accepted when criteria was different or was accepted by a group of reviewers that believe “more stops = better game”. People should be reviewing each nomination individually according to current criteria.
Good Luck
With a different photograph/explanation you should be able to get it in. If there’s links to the project or an announcement, add it to supplemental info. Emphasize that it’s permanent, and why is was installed. I receive a post card of ‘art stairs’ all the time.
Well, I do think the appeal rejection is wrong, since this does not look like any “regular stair tower” I have ever seen. It does look like art to me, and an interesting destination to explore. But if you were going to receive a new email with an acceptance instead, I think you would have by this time.
Did you say here if this was an “automated process” rejection originally? I see that you mentioned that the railway makes it difficult to get any different angle for the photo. I think this photo does capture what the point of interest is. Maybe on a resubmit you could take the photo from closer up, but use a zoom that makes you appear farther away, like .6 - I have done that when there are trees in the way.
If you can find any links to prove the animal design is intentional artwork, that would help the case for a resubmit. Or anything else to prove the project is significant to the area. But it seems like you have already looked.
I see a very nicely painted tower that does a good job of stopping this piece of infrastructure looking ugly. What I cannot see in this photo is anything more than that, except for a hint of it looking like an animal now that I have been told that and have looked at the photo for long enough.
With the web submission (which is the only method now), you can provide multiple supporting photos. This angle is very good for the main photo, but I would use the supporting photos to include shots from the front, to either side of the walkway, to show that this is intended to look like an animal.
You haven’t found links, so need to rely on photography. If it’s an animal, it has two eyes etc, so show this from the front.
Unfortunately couldnt find any info of it
There u go everyone. It was supposed to Look like fox/dog which I heard when they build it but thats it and I personally can Even see mouth of it If ur walking from nose direction
Include a photo like that as one of your five supporting photos
Since my appeal didn’t go through, is it ok to just send it as new? I think I will need help with texting
I need to check these comments again and hope for the best. This is not THAT important to be a stop, but just got surprised thing like this didn’t get accepted when I was personally 100% sure there wouldnt be any kind of issues.
- Can I still keep original photo to be a stop?
- Which key points I should keep on description?
- I will make its name as “Fox staircase”, is it ok?
Thanks everyone already and will inform If accepted or not.
As long as it wasn’t rejected by the automated system, reusing the same main photo should be fine.
I would be tempted to go with “Animal Staircase” as it appears differently to different people.
I would focus on the visual aspects and only mention its purpose as a sidebar. It’s purpose is functional, so less important.
You can post again here before submitting
Ookay so this is what I’ve made up:
Animal Stairs
"Tower Stairs from the pedestrian path along Kauklahdenväylä to Hansatie. Built in 2024.
The stairs were built to shorten the walking distance from Kauklahdenväylä to Hansatie, and especially for schoolchildren, to create a faster and safer route from Lasilaakso to Kauklahti School.
The stairs themselves are constructed from metal, but because of Kauklahti’s generally beautiful appearance and with schoolchildren in mind, they were designed to resemble a dog or a fox.
In addition to the head and four legs, several other animal-like features can be noticed: a tail, eyes on both sides, an orange mouth, and a snout that people can walk along to reach the staircase.
The stairs are open to everyone, safe, and accessible around the clock."
I don’t know what to put to supporting information but is there ANYTHING else to put in? I kinda gave these infos for latest appeal but maybe real human havent read it lol
That’s great. I’d approve it if it came up in my review.
Even without Google street view proof the additional photos establish it’s real and what the intended visual design is.
Much better than the 1000 “walking bridge” submissions I see.
For me, the last three supporting photos help to prove existence, but don’t add anything to show the artistic quality of this. The first one definitely does this.
If you can get a photo from the walkway behind the fence at the top, looking down at the structure through a hole in the fence, this might provide a good angle.
This belongs in the supporting information:
“The stairs are open to everyone, safe, and accessible around the clock.”
I like the description
