Wayfarer Removal Appeal - Ben Bowen's Birthplace Plaque, Treorci

When submitting a Wayspot Appeal, make sure to include as much of the following information as possible:

  • Wayspot Title: Ben Bowen’s Birthplace Plaque
  • Location (lat/lon): 51.65811719904372, -3.4991891635504175
  • City: Treorci, RCT
  • Country: Wales, UK
  • Screenshot of the Rejection Email (do not include your personal information): none, not applicable here.
  • Additional Information (if any):

I am the Co-CA for the local area, and this will be my next removal appeal.

I would next like to appeal the removal of the gym (Wayspot) that is a plaque dedicated to the birthplace of the renowned local poet Ben Bowen. The person is well known locally, and their work is still taught in schools. Here is some information on him: BOWEN, BEN (1878 - 1903), student and poet | Dictionary of Welsh Biography

The plaque is on the front, facing the road, and is entirely public facing, there is no need to trespass on private property to reach it - it’s entirely accessible from the street. It has never been removed or in any way changed as far as I can find, based on historical records. I am happy to get up-to-date photos if that would be helpful, but Google Maps shows it being there as of April this year. I can’t identify when it was initially installed, but I’ve found a date range between 1910 and 1920.

I’m not sure what has been going on with this one. It was in the game before I started playing, and dates back to the very early Ingress days. When gyms were first added to Pokemon GO, it was one of the first in our area - making it a piece of the game’s local history. It was initially removed in June-July of this year, then it briefly came back (I believe it was resubmitted, rather than appealed), before it was removed again shortly thereafter (around the time the trail markers were mass removed from the area). I would like to appeal to get the Wayspot (and corresponding gym) restored in its entirety.

If it can’t be restored for any reason, I would ask that Niantic indicate why, and the reason for the removals - if said information can be shared. At least then I’ll have answers as to why it was removed to feed back to the community.

Thank you as always for taking the time to review this matter. Questions and comments are also welcome.

Hi,

First there is no need to mention you are Pokemon Go CA, its great that you have an active community but not relevant to wayspot appeals.

This appears to be a Single Family Private Residential Property (SFPRP). As it is someones home it is not allowed. It does not matter that the home is right on the pavement it is an individual home and that is a strict no.

It is a common occurrence in the UK as these plaques are often on SFPRP and sadly cant be included.

This is the official clarification

Can you give me a link to the guidance that covers it, because I keep seeing things mentioned (here and elsewhere) that I can’t find in the guidelines, and it makes it pretty difficult to know what I should spend time and effort appealing.

If that is the rule, then this can be closed, because it’s likely a single-owned property. Sucks to loose nearly a decade of game history, but there we go.

There should be a definitive guide for this stuff, because the hit-and-miss documentation is incredibly unhelpful. Hopefully it’s on the roadmap.

This is spelled out several places. If you go to the Wayfarer site, you can find the rejection criteria stated both under the help and criteria tabs, and the forum clarification is there, too. Or you can go to the separate help site and see all the rules there.

There are four topics there to expand, including the clarifications section with the link that @elijustrying pointed you to.

The criteria clarification collection is a key place for some elaborations.

For a long time following a an early Pokemon Go courtcase wayspots on private residential property have been out of the question. This probably predated that ruling and just never was picked up.

If you have any questions or doubts then do ask in one of the other areas as we are all happy to help.

I shall move this to nomination support as that is now the most appropriate place.

To be perfectly honest I have no way of knowing if it’s a single owned property or not, and I could assume that it is, or that it isn’t. HMO’s are common here. I could assume it isn’t one, and the team could assume it is - it’s an unwinnable argument based on supposition.

There really is no way of knowing for certain, and that’s ultimately the problem with rules that demand an assumption to begin with. I’m not going to assume it isn’t a SFPRP, and then ultimately be proven wrong down the line. I stick to the rules as best I can.

Regardless of any of that, I’m closing this and I’m going to feed back back to the community why it’s been rejected, and that regardless of it’s importance or historical relevance, it’s not going to be accepted as a Wayspot going forward.

Generally, the clues to look out for when determining whether something is single or multi family residence are things like multiple doorbells or letterboxes, or potentially property listings.

That’s correct. Rejection criteria trump eligibility criteria. If the location itself does not meet the criteria, anything on its property would be ineligible, regardless of significance.

thank you for explaining what you thought wasn’t clear. i thought you meant the rule. yes, i wish the “how to know it is SFPRP” stuff were clearer, too. like when little free libraries are allowed in front of a home listed as single family, and when they are not.

to me

Just to confirm something. The Waypoint (currently a stop) has returned. Was there a decision made by Wayfarer to overturn the removal? There hasn’t been notice here of that, though I remain hopeful that the historical relevance would be taken into account for reconsideration.

I had fed back that this was ineligible based on the guidance I received here, so it should not be a resubmission.

This does seem to be a resubmit

If you can spread the word in the community that resubmitting places that have been removed can lead to sanctions on their wayfarer and Pokemon Go accounts. And I really dont want that to happen.

You can see who submitted it on the wayspot photo to see if you know them. IDK if a screenshot is allowed that shows the name on the forum.

Believe me. I made it very clear that it wasn’t a valid Wayspot and wasn’t going to be restored, based on the feedback here. I had hoped it was a reconsideration on Wayfarer’s part, but that’s obviously not the case.

I’ll have to find out who resubmitted it when I get back at my computer and speak to them directly. I’m trying to avoid people getting sanctioned, but there’s only so much I can do. :sob:

Failed report seems to state that it has been removed but not updated on the map…
