Wayspot Removal Appeal

When submitting a Wayspot Appeal, make sure to include as much of the following information as possible:

  • Wayspot Title: Historic Crowned Victorian Stinkpipe

  • Location (lat/lon): 51°27’21.9"N 0°05’56.0"E - 51.456089,0.098901

  • City: Welling, London

  • Country: United Kingdom

  • Screenshot of the Rejection Email : I received no notification of the wayspot’s removal.

  • Additional Information (if any):

This submission was nominated and accepted in October 2022. Multiple accepted PoI’s of a similar category (Stinkpipe) exist within the local area, and this is a common type of wayspot across London.

The PoI was a part of a former utility service which was depreciated decades ago - it now resides as a silent reminder of the city’s history.

Upon checking the submission rejection criteria, I do not believe there was anything to make it ineligible.

Following a manual review from Niantic due to the PoI’s name being caught in a profanity filter, this submission was accepted.

This wayspot has been removed without notice, and is no longer present on multiple games (Pokemon Go, Monster Hunter: Now)

The PoI sits on public property on a pedestrian footpath, has been present for over 90 years, and does not obstruct access to private property nor emergency service.

I doubt this fits removal criteria, and believe has been falsely reported.

I will capture & attach pictures later today of the PoI location (with geotagging in the metadata) to cross-reference it’s continued existence; it is currently 1am local time and too dark to photograph properly.

In addition, it is visible within a recent capture on Google StreetView from July 2025 Google Maps

Please let me know if I can provide further clarification.

Regards,

Relvees

Hello and welcome @Relvees

Stinkpipes are often not accepted as they are a utility item although some are quite ornate so may be acceptable. However once accepted they rarely meet removal criteria, as they are normally on pavements, which this one is.
However it is right next to someone’s back garden. Could it be that there have been noisy gatherings there? It has been a hot summer so people could have been using the garden a lot. So although on public property it might have been creating a nuisance?
If it is a property owner request the team will say so.

Following my earlier footnote, here are photos of the 3 directional viewpoints, and a closer photo of where it sits within the public footpath, and not within a property boundary (albiet close by)

I’ve made redactions to some identifying details (licence plates)

These photos should contain geotag metadata from when they were taken

Today I learned about “stink pipes” / stench poles. This forum is educational .

I would Accept these as they are Rare Victorian Infrastructure. Most where removed at the time so any remaining are quite exclusive. At least 1 has been given Grade II listing and I would assume others will follow.

I would accept under the Explore criteria. In the same way as UK Post Boxes pre Elizabeth II are usually accepted.

I would happily accept an unusual one and listing helps confirm this. Most I have seen are very plain. Also in some areas where they haven’t been removed they can occur not that far apart, and they start to look very routine.
Actually I rarely see any evidence provided it’s often stated it’s historic but no links or proof etc.

But let’s wait and see what the case is with this one .

Hi again,

It’s been a few days, is this being investigated?

I’m not sure how long it would take before there would be a response, should I have tagged someone as well?

Its been quite demoralising to see this spot removed, it was a part our daily walk routine in the area..

Thanks,
Relvees

Hi,
I understand why you are keen for a resolution, but you need to be patient for a response from the Wayfarer Team.

While waiting you could compile more evidence about this particular candidate significance. It will increase your chance. If staff come and decide that its just common infrastructure, it would be too late and there is nothing else you can do

The stop has previously existed in-game for nearly 3 years now, and similar stops like this are present across london.

I dont think this is a case of not meeting acceptance criteria.
I think it has been removed following false reporting that it does not exist - i attached recent photos from 4 days ago to confirm it is still present

Is there additional evidence that I should supply?

It is not helpful to point fingers at the suspects who would choose to report this stop, but its the only other thing I can think of that could be added..

This is not basis for acceptance. Some Ineligible wayspot exist way more than 3 years and its just waiting on borrowed time..

If there is many of this thing in the area, it will make this particular wayspot less unique

Focus on this wayspot. Its better if you can talk more about this particular wayspot

If there is something more about this wayspot beside its old, it will increase your chance.

As cited above - this has more than likely not met removal criteria.

Its validity on current acceptance criteria is not the point in focus at the moment, im appealing the decision to remove it.

Good luck then. I dont have anything else to said

Thanks for the appeal, @Relvees! We have taken another look, but stand by our decision to remove the Wayspot in question.
