34 Wayspots lost in Africa

Hello,

I recently came across 16 Wayspots located in Africa that are actually supposed to be elsewhere. Fortunately, I managed to identify the correct locations for all of them.

I decided to create a topic rather than reporting them individually through the support chat (>10m location edit), mainly because of the number of Wayspots involved, and also because I thought it would be useful to make the community aware that this issue may exist beyond these examples.

Interestingly, many of them are Indian or Indonesian Wayspots with no image, created automatically by Niantic.

Could the Wayfarer staff please take a look and, if everything checks out, correct the locations of these Wayspots?

And perhaps more importantly: these may not be the only ones. Finding the first 16 was more or less a case of following a trail of suspicious locations in African deserts and forests, so there could be others hiding out there.

Instead of using the help chat, you can do mass moves with the " Request modification or removal of a PokéStop or Gym" form. I’ve done it.

Since you have posted here already, staff will often action something like this from a post on the forum. I would wait and see if they do before you submit a report, too.

Looking at the Wayspots, it appears that all the Wayspots with photos date back to 2015 and earlier. Pokemon Go didn’t exist until 2016 so these Wayspot were submitted via Ingress OPR. So maybe a GPS error during submission in Ingress. The Wayspots without photos and descriptions from 2024 are more than likely Imported Wayspots with the wrong GPS.

As the Wayspots still haven’t been moved, I’ve opened a support ticket (#560672).

Good news! I’ve found their real location and added them in the first post.

AHASS (Astra Honda Authorized Service Station, IOW service center for Honda motorcycles) sounds like it was from 3rd party import. Maybe they input the coordinates wrong?

Yeah, it looks like most of these are imports. I’m curious how they got the coordinates wrong.

Thanks for the report.

These Wayspots were located across different countries and continents. Moving them doesn’t make sense here. So, I have removed these Wayspots. You should see the changes reflected soon.

Why doesn’t it make sense since their real location were found and can be proved in Google Maps ? I’ve made several reports in the past for Wayspots in middle of the ocean and they all were correctly moved. I don’t understand it at all. Moving instead of removing would improve the playability and benefit the local communities, which should be your main goal.

Was that the ones that had an obvious coordinates error with the latitude and longitude being swapped round (or negative/positive swapped, but I think it was the former)?

That’s a different situation. The wayspots did exist at the coordinates intended, just that a data glitch caused the coordinates to get corrupted.

Here, the wayspots exist a long long way away from the intended coordinates.

@salixsorbus Regardless of the underlying cause, the end result is essentially the same: genuine places, submitted or added years ago, ended up incorrectly located in random and often inaccessible places.

In both cases, correcting their locations would have been a much better outcome than removing them. These Wayspots could have benefited local communities and improved gameplay in their actual locations, provided they still met the eligibility criteria. That’s why I spent several hours looking for their correct location.

@ScopelyExpAaron I would sincerely ask the Wayfarer team to reconsider this decision. Thank you for taking the time to review this again.
