Weir nomination rejected as "River" – what am I doing wrong?

Hi everyone,

I’d like some advice on a nomination that was rejected twice, first by the automated system and then on appeal.

The nomination is a stone weir on the Sázava River next to the former Brejlov mill (Czech Republic). It is not the river itself but a permanent man-made structure built across the river. Its stone crest is above the water level most of the year.

Why I think it fits the criteria:

  • Social: In summer, people sit on the weir crest and relax by the water, and local anglers come here all year round.
  • Exercise: It is on a popular walking and running route along the river.
  • Access: It is freely accessible on foot via a footpath along the riverbank, and the water is shallow, so it is safe.

The appeal was rejected with the reason: “This is a River, which are commonly found.” Link to the nomination: Scopely Explore Wayfarer

My guess is that my main photo showed too much of the river and the mill, so the weir itself wasn’t obvious. I’ve attached screenshots of the nomination.

My questions:

  1. Is a weir like this eligible at all?
  2. If so, how should I improve the photos, title and description so it is clear that the nomination is the weir, not the river?

Thanks a lot for any advice!

Welcome to the forum

I think your main photo is good and is clearly focussing on the weir with the right amount of context.

I don’t think a weir is an easy submission at all. Forget exercise as the weir does nothing towards this. Being near a walking route is irrelevant as it is the walking route that meets exercise, not objects you go past.

Being a spot where people sometimes go does not make something social. A park can have areas where people commonly picnic, but an area of open grass within a park is hard to sell as a social space.

If it has a google maps pin, this would help with it being a point of exploration. Being discussed on websites as a place to go would also help. I think both of these are unlikely.

I have to agree with Salix. It’s not impossible to argue that this is a valid sub, but I think you are going to struggle to find reviewers who agree.
