Why do you submit POIs

I always like sharing what I’ve learned from a place and passing the knowledge to the next explorer. I have edited Wikipedia off and on for 20 years so it’s been long ingrained.

Power, glory and fame.

No riches?

Bring it up at the next Ambassador meeting?

First I wanted to make a solid play area for me and other peeps in town. And then I was hooked. I Been submitting for 4 months well over 100 nominations in. Currently it’s all about more gyms for raids! I do want to do more “ collection” wayfaring. Feathers in my cap type noms.

I also enjoy submitting in my friends towns and getting them interesting in wayfaring.

It’s very satisfying when the community agrees your nomination is a valid POI, and that feeds my dedication to finding more, I like exploring and learning about the history of my area and further afield, so they all go together well

It is funny how the game impacts me.

Like I said, I have about 80 successful POIs… About 5 of which I still consider wasted because I didn’t know the PMG Cell Rules. They were all big locations like Baseball Fields where there were multiple accurate pin locations, and unfortantely not know the rules back in 2017-8 and hidden submissions blocked them. There is one local park in particular I get sad about since it should have 3 more POIS.

There are perhaps another 5 blocked POIS, where I knew they wouldn’t show but they were unique/cool enough that I stopped anyway.

The other 70 or so are within 3 miles of my house, or along my drive to work of which probably 65 of those 70, were towards creating a gym. I’ve made/triggered about 30-40 gyms (If you don’t know Gyms are exponential 2nd, 6th, 20th… so it might take me 3 POIs to make 1 gym, or 1 POI to make 1 Gym)

In fact, one of my own personal goals in pokemon is to get gold gyms. I have over 200 of them. So whenever I’m about done with Gyms to work on in game, I load up the map, look at cells that 1-3 POIs would trigger a gym, jump on Google Maps and start exploring or drive there and look around.

So my in game goal (gold Gyms) leads me to wayfarer to make more POIs to increase my goal

I wanted my local area - a village next to a town - to be a good place to play.

I detested going into the town centre to play events with people shopping etc all around, feeling like there’s no space and having to dodge around people all the time. Playing in a polluted, busy, urban environment was a chore and highly stressful for me.

It always seemed ridiculous to me that the game’s goal was to get people walking, but the game board was dire in any location where you would actually want to walk!

Pre-wayfarer, if I wanted to go for a walk or run through the parks and along the river, I’d have to stop catching Pokémon or buy items to do so. HPWU was the same experience. The only way to stock up was to go into town. Playing locally just meant a miserable and expensive experience.

I wanted to be able to play in my local parks and quieter areas, and by the riverside walking trails, where there was space and cleaner air. So my mission was to make that area as good as town, which I achieved a while back, and in the last couple of months we actually made it better than town!

You did!

One of your submissions was on my showcase the other day. The 1885/6 brickwork

Great stuff :black_heart:

I think thats the first time I’ve had a showcase, was very exciting!

That submission was so funny because I have no idea why I had never noticed it before!! Then one day, you look up at a different point and see it! Also perfect that the old house it was on is now a shop so there was no issue with private property.

Getting on the showcase is a great feeling. It helps motivation a lot. I do wish it were better curated to show the best of the best. Yours was a great choice to be showcased.

Thankyou!! And yes it is a really nice feeling

Is there a way to see each other’s nominations (or at least their showcases) or is this just a case where folks recognized your account name? I’d love to see the showcase stop you mention. I’m trying to learn to see my community with fresh eyes, as there are fewer opportunities in my rural area and I’m so tired of having to drive a half hour to play. There’s a local hiking trail that I don’t see stops on (at least not on or near the trailhead closest to me), an old church, and a hundred-year-old monument dedicating the local well (long gone) to the community that is still on public land (maintained lovingly by neighbors since there’s no longer a municipality), and not much else. But I keep feeling like there may be things I’m not seeing. This tiny community used to be a silver-rush boom town and there are structures from that time but except for the well, I think they’re all on private property. And there are locals running businesses out of their homes, but I doubt a beauty parlor in someone’s house counts.

Maybe I can upload a picture?

Yes its difficult finding places to nominate the further you are from a big town or city. For me, I am lucky to be in a village that has sort of merged with a town, but the river separates the 2 areas.

Travel 10 mins north and its countryside, and very sparse. We have been trying to nominate walking and biking trails as a good way to bring some waypoints to those areas. I was also able to nominate a community co-op shop that is run mainly by volunteers which was helpful.

I suppose that satisfaction of adding something keeps me going! Especially when someone notices and says thanks or sends me a gift from the new stop!

I only noticed because I recognised @frealafgb 's username from here. I see a few users from here pop up in showcases. I tend to see the same names show up regularly that are not recognisable from here too.

It’s based on location, I’m sure someone has an image to hand that will show where your showcase picks come from.

The showcase draws from your local area so you can’t see others unfortunately, I remembered seeing this particular one on mine, I’m a fan of historical buildings so it stood out.

That is a problem with a lot of historical buidings, unfortunately many are private residences, although some are used as community spaces or by businesses so could be eligible if you’re lucky.

If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post the general area in Nomination Support and plenty of us are happy to look on satellite and ither resources to help you find things to submit.

One of you here must have managed all three Showcases at the same time by now?

Nice work. I got all three once, those were exciting times!
